MARIANNE MOORE (15 novembre 1887 – 5 febbraio 1972)

Ritto sopra l’arboreo candelabro
Luigi Quindicesimo, di boccioli dipinti
di celosie, dalie,
ricci di mare e sempreverdi,
sta posato sulla spuma ramosa
di lucidi fiori
scolpiti — serenamente, e alto. Il re è morto.

A UN UCCELLO DA PREDA

Tu vai bene per me; sai farmi ridere,
né ti lasci accecare dalla pula
che ogni vento solleva a mulinello dalla bica.

Tu sai pensare, e ciò che pensi dici
quasi con la fierezza di Sansone e la sua fredda
determinazione; né alcuno osa fermarti.

L’orgoglio ti sta bene, così impettito, colossale uccello.
Nessun cortile ti fa sembrare assurdo;
i tuoi bronzei artigli sono saldi contro la sconfitta.

POESIA

Neanche a me piace.
A leggerla, però, con totale disprezzo, vi si scopre,
dopo tutto, uno spazio per l’autentico.

CHE COSA SONO GLI ANNI

Che cos’è la nostra innocenza, che cosa la nostra colpa? Tutti
sono nudi, nessuno è salvo. E donde
viene il coraggio: la domanda senza risposta,
l’intrepido dubbio, –
che chiama senza voce, ascolta senza udire –
che nell’avversità, perfino nella morte,
ad altri dà coraggio
e nella sua sconfitta sprona

l’anima a farsi forte? Vede
profondo ed è contento chi
accede alla mortalità
e nella sua prigionia ti leva
sopra se stesso, come
fa il mare dentro una voragine,
che combatte per essere libero
e benché respinto
trova nella sua resa
la sua sopravvivenza.

Così colui che sente fortemente
si comporta. L’uccello stesso,
che è cresciuto cantando, tempra
la sua forma e la innalza. È prigioniero,
ma il suo cantare vigoroso dice:
misera cosa è la soddisfazione,
e come pura e nobile è la gioia.
Questo è mortalità,
questo è eternità.

OH, ESSERE UN DRAGO

Se anch’io potessi, come Salomone,…
vedere esaudito un desiderio —

il desiderio mio… Oh, essere un drago,
simbolo del potere del Cielo — grande quanto
un filugello o immenso; e invisibile a volte.
Fenomeno felice!

POSSO, POTREI, DEVO

Se mi direte perché la palude
appare insuperabile,
allora vi dirò perché io credo
di poterla passare se ci provo.

UNA MEDUSA

Visibile, invisibile, fluttuante meraviglia —
vi abita dentro un’ametista
ambrata — il tuo braccio
si accosta, e lei si apre
e si chiude; pensavi
di ghermirla, ed essa freme;
tu rinunci all’idea.

NO SWAN SO FINE

“No water so still as the
dead fountains of Versailles.” No swan,
with swart blind look askance
and gondoliering legs, so fine
as the chinz china one with fawn-
brown eyes and toothed gold
collar on to show whose bird it was.

Lodged in the Louis Fifteenth
candelabrum-tree of cockscomb-
tinted buttons, dahlias,
sea-urchins, and everlastings,
it perches on the branching foam
of polished sculptured
flowers—at ease and tall. The king is dead.

TO A PRIZE BIRD

You suit me well; for you can make me laugh,
nor are you blinded by the chaff
that every wind sends spinning from the rick.

You know to think, and what you think you speak
with much of Samson’s pride and bleak
finality; and none dare bid you stop.

Pride sits you well, so strut, colossal bird.
No barnyard makes you look absurd;
your brazen claws are staunch against defeat.

POETRY

I, too, dislike it.
Reading it, however, with a perfect contempt for it, one discovers in
it, after all, a place for the genuine.

WHAT ARE YEARS

What is our innocence,
what is our guilt? All are
naked, none is safe. And whence
is courage: the unanswered question,
the resolute doubt—
dumbly calling, deafly listening—that
in misfortune, even death,
encourage others
and in its defeat, stirs

the soul to be strong? He
sees deep and is glad, who
accedes to mortality
and in his imprisonment rises
upon himself as
the sea in a chasm, struggling to be
free and unable to be,
in its surrendering
finds its continuing.

So he who strongly feels,
behaves. The very bird,
grown taller as he sings, steels
his form straight up. Though he is captive,
his mighty singing
says, satisfaction is a lowly
thing, how pure a thing is joy.
This is mortality,
this is eternity.

O, TO BE A DRAGON

If I, like Solomon,…
could have my wish—

my wish… O to be a dragon,
a symbol of the power of Heaven—of silkworm
size or immense; at times invisible.
Felicitous phenomenon!

I MAY, I MIGHT, I MUST

If you will tell me why the fen
appears impassable, I then
will tell you why I think that I
can get across it if I try.

A JELLYFISH

Visible, invisible,
a fluacting charm
an amber-tinctured amethyst
inhabits it, your arm
approaches and it opens
and it closes; you had meant
to catch it and it quivers;
you abandon your intent.
